Midway Surf Life Saving Club

Gisborne

Vote now for Midway Surf Life Saving Club

Long, hot summers and rolling surf characterise Midway beach in the height of summer and thousands flock to the shore during New Year when Rhythm and Vines hits.

Have your say by voting today to help Midway win a desperately needed Inflatable Rescue Boat.

Why us?

  • Between 100 and 1,000 people visit the shores of Midway per day each summer
  • IRBs are a key piece of equipment for search and rescues and the club’s current IRBs are battered, old, and in need of replacement
  • Our members are a key part of our community and some of our surf lifeguards have been with us for decades – we’re in it for life

A Case Study:

A woman swept out to sea in choppy conditions was “climbing the ladder” in a frantic bid to breathe by the time a Midway surf lifeguard was able to reach her. The lifeguard had been coaching her ocean squad when a member of the public came down and said they saw someone in trouble. The lifeguard grabbed a board and paddled out 200 metres to where the swimmer was struggling. She pulled the woman’s arms on to the board and tried to keep her head above water while calling out for help. Another lifeguard ran down the beach and paddled out on a rescue board to support her and soon an IRB was in the water to take the swimmer to shore. The lifeguards transported the woman back to the surf club where she was attended to by St John ambulance staff. Later, the swimmer insisted she would not have survived without the help of Midway lifeguards.

Vote now and help this club win a much-needed IRB to continue their life-saving work.

Numbers from the 2018/19 summer:

  • 1,495 hours spent patrolling the beach
  • 187 preventative actions taken
  • 283 club members
  • 48 volunteer surf lifeguards
