Oreti Surf Life Saving Club patrol one of New Zealand’s southernmost beaches near Invercargill. One stormy night, a deck collapsed and smashed through both hulls of Oreti Surf Life Saving Club’s only two Inflatable Rescue Boats and now, they need your votes to win an IRB to protect their unique stretch of coastline.
For the first time this year, Oreti Surf Life Saving Club sent two up-and-coming teams to compete in the Southern Region Patrol Champs as a way to fast-track the improvement and development of their IRB crews. They saw it as an opportunity to get their IRB crews fitter, faster and more skilled so they can save even more lives in summer. But, despite success in upskilling their lifeguards, they went away to the carnival with two IRBs and returned with none. On the long drive home, the team stayed the night at St Kilda Surf Life Saving Club in Dunedin and amidst extreme winds, the deck at St Kilda gave way and landed on their IRB trailer, slashing both hulls beyond repair and leaving them with no IRBs at the time. As a vital resource for the Southland coastline, it’s crucial to get enough IRBs back on their beach so they can keep saving lives. Vote now to help Oreti Surf Life Saving Club keep their beach safe.
